Since 2014, Lisa has served as the Clerk of Superior Court for Guilford County and has worked diligently to improve the clerk’s office. Over the past 7 years, Lisa along with her fabulous team of clerks have made great strides in providing Consistency, Efficiency and the Ultimate in Community Service.
Lisa has over 25 years of experience with the judicial system. She began her career as a paralegal and later decided to attend law school to pursue her passion further. In 2006, after working for the law firm formerly known as Hunter Higgins for three (3) years, Lisa left to pursue her desire for public service by becoming an Assistant District Attorney. After eight years, Lisa wanted to serve at a higher level to make more of a difference by becoming Clerk of Superior Court.
In this position, Lisa is extremely honored and proud to work with over 100 men and women who are committed to working with her to serve the citizens of Guilford County in both High Point and Greensboro. During her two terms in office, Lisa has compiled a long list of accomplishments . Lisa learned to survive and navigate her way through a pandemic and organized and cleaned up all filing and work spaces in both Greensboro and High Point. Both offices have been upgraded during her tenure; she was successful in working with the County of Guilford to paint, re-carpet and install new cubicles in both locations. Lisa and her team received the highest internal audit rating of EFFICIENT, receiving praise from NCAOC on how efficiently the office scans its documents, serving as a model for the entire state. The Guilford County Clerk's office under Lisa's leadership has successfully entered data into the computer system of old files so that gun permits could be processed in a more timely manner. Lisa has improved the communication between the High Point and Greensboro offices as well as our communication with all court partners. In addition, Lisa has worked to improve hearings before the Clerk in the estates and special proceedings divisions.
Lisa is an active member of several organizations, including the NC Conference of Clerks of Superior Court where I serve as the Chair of the Joint Bar/Clerks Committee, the NC State Bar, High Point Bar Association; and Greensboro Bar Association. She is also an Adjunct Professor at GTCC teaching Criminal Law and Procedure; a member of the Greensboro Day School Board of Visitors; a member of the Greensboro Drifters, Inc. (former National President of the National Drifters), a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, and a former member of the Greensboro Junior League just to name a few.
Lisa does not take my service for granted and is thankful for the support given to her over the years. Lisa and her husband, Deputy Sheriff JT Tonkins believe in service and their commitment to Guilford County is unwavering. They both were born in Guilford County and have raised their boys here.
Running for public office is not easy but Lisa is committed to service and that is why she is running for re-election for a 3rd term in 2022. Lisa is a promise keeper and will continue to work hard for the citizens of Guilford County as Clerk if re-elected.
